Matt Damon Actor Biography Born: Matthew Paige Damon Date of Birth: October 8, 1970. Place of Birth: Cambridge, Massachusetts Family: Kent (father), Nancy Carlsson-Paige (mother), Kyle (brother) Born Matthew Paige Damon (the Paige from his mother's maiden name), Matt was an adorable and charming baby. Father, Kent Damon, a retired investment banker and mother, Nancy Carlsson-Paige, a professor of education at Lesley College couldn't have asked for better children than Matt and brother Kyle. Having moved from Newton, Massachusetts (a very high class, high society type atmospheric Boston neighborhood) to Cambridge "for the schools and the chance to live across from a halfway house and near street people," his mom wanted him to learn about the real world and those who live in it. (One of those people turned out to be neighbor, Howard Zinn, who wrote "A People's History of the United States," which Matt mentions in Good Will Hunting. A loving environment and a steady family support base guided baby Matt through the years of little league as well as adolescence of attending the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School. When Matt was ten years old, he met a kid that lived two blocks away. That kid was none other than writing partner, Ben Affleck. In Ben's recollection, he describes Matt's mother as an "activist lefty." He also says, "My mom was trying to get me to work around teh house and would say, 'Well, Matt's mom makes him cook once a week.' So I first knew him as a guy who was really setting a bad precedent in the neighborhood." Also according to Ben in a Details interview, the two "played Dungeons & Dragons, video baseball, short stop in Little League, watched Godzilla and Kung Fu double features on Saturdays, followed the adventures of The Super Friends and The X-Men." They spent so much time together that it was inevitable that they'd become the best of friends. And inevitably, together, they'd become the best of actors, the best of writers. University: Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts Attendance: 1988-1991 Major: Unknown Status: Currently has 2 semesters left to graduate Matt has always been undeniably handsome, yet few people know how truly smart he is. Having done more than exceptionally well in high school, Matt was accepted into one of the most prestigious colleges in the entire world; Harvard University. Harvard University, based in Matt's hometown of Cambridge, Massachusetts, only takes the "cream of the crop" when it comes to education. It was a tremendous accomplishment and an honor that should not be overlooked. Just as his character, Will Hunting, in Good Will Hunting we're shown that there's truth to the cliche "Don't judge a book by its cover." No one would've guessed that a troubled, young, kid working as a janitor to possess the intelligence and brain power that could exceed those of heralded geniuses. In this society we often misguidedly perceive those who are extremely beautiful to be incapable of being extremely smart, but in this case Matt definitely has both the looks and the brains. While Matt was attending Harvard University, he was required to write a screenplay for one of his English classes. That screenplay was what would become the 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. However, he was unable to finish it for class and had put it aside to work on later. On Matt's application to Harvard University, he stated he wanted to become an actor. Problem was Harvard has long been known for teaching the best of future doctors and lawyers and does not have a huge acting program. So, after three years at the university, in Matt's junior year, he dropped out to pursue his acting career full time. Projects did not come easily, nor did they come in great amounts. Scraping for rent at times, Matt was frustrated and disappointed again and again. Finally, a role came that he thought would give him his big break. That movie was Courage Under Fire (starring Denzel Washington and Meg Ryan). Playing a heroin addict, he wanted to make the character as convincing as possible, but at the time he wasn't a big enough "name" for the studio to hire him a professional nutritionist. He then took on the responsibilities of preparing for the role upon himself. Having lost nearly 40 pounds, Matt later said it was the biggest mistake of his life because he got so incredibly sick and had to take medicated pills for years to get his metabolism back to normal. The movie gained raved reviews, but Matt's performance was often overshadowed by those of the stars. Though Denzel Washington made it a point to publicly acknowledge and commend Matt's work, he gained limited press attention because he did not have an agent and was not well known at the time. It was after this troubling time for Matt that he wanted to completely quit the business. After having put his heart and soul into the Courage character and gaining little respect and recognition, Matt was fed up and had been disappointed for the last time. After years of getting only the scripts that A-list actors such as Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt or former friend (and School Ties co-star) Chris O'Donnell passed up, Matt got tired of reading hand-me-downs. There weren't any good roles being offered to Matt, so rather than wasting more time and waiting for something to come, it was then that he decided to write a good script himself. Remembering that he had started a screenplay for a class at Harvard, Matt pulled out and dusted off the old pages. Over the next few years with many beers, improvs, and faxes back and forth, Matt and best friend, Ben Affleck continued to add to the screenplay. They finally finished in 1992 and then the bidding war began. "Good Will Hunting" they called it. It's a story about friendships and the depth of an individual. Four friends, all of whom would lie down in traffic for any one of the others, have lived all their lives in the rough area of South Boston (otherwise known as "Southie"). One, Will Hunting (played by Matt Damon) has a remarkable gift of genius capacity. Sheltered by the safety of his friends, Will has no desire to leave Southie, but the story takes you through the trials and tribulations of this young character as he struggles to find out what's best for himself. What's presented as a simple story with simple characters actually has more depth than anyone ever expected. It is this that makes "Good Will Hunting" so wonderful. It may have come from two young writing ameteurs, but it was in a word: brilliant. It may have only focused on one genius onscreen, but it's the work of two geniuses behind the screen that made it possible. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck had cashed in their winning lottery ticket. "Good Will Hunting" was the surprise hit of 1997. Released Christmas Day, the film was still successful and high in box office reports in May of 1998. It has become the highest grossing film in Miramax history. It has been nominated for countless awards which include the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the most prominent of them all; the Oscar. It's stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck even nabbed one of those golden statues for "Best Original Screenplay" and Matt a nomination for Best Actor. With Oscar in tow, Matt Damon has become larger than life. Months before the award shows even started the circuit Matt was enormously popular. Just the hype from the underdog movie of the year alone made Matt Damon a household name. Now he's hot property in Hollywood. Every director from old friend, Kevin Smith, to legendary Steven Spielberg wanted Matt in their movies. Both, however, were smart enough to see his talent and cast him before all the hysteria. Now Miramax has done everything possible to make Matt and Ben official posterboys for their production company. A multi-year deal they have. Dozens of movies and screenplays in the works for Matt. What more could Hollywood's Golden Boy ask for? There are many things that come with success that we cannot understand if we haven't been there. Only a handful of people reach the height and level of success that Matt has reached. When you get there, there are the advantages such as respect, recognition, and admiration. Then there are the disadvantages. The least fun part about being successful is the loss of privacy. When your job is making films for the public, therefore you're in the public eye, sometimes people feel as if you should always be in the spotlight. People lose sight of the fact that it's only a job and that after that job, they are still just like the rest of us: humans. Though Matt has lost a great deal of privacy over the last few months; having his every move followed by dozens of cameras while he's trying to eat dinner, go out on the town, or just out with a friend, he's handled it well. Matt's also bears the opportunity cost of not being able to see his family and friends as often as he'd like, but he takes it all in stride. Those that have met him have said nothing but good things. That's what makes him all the more genuine. That's what makes him all the more admirable. With the incredible success of Good Will Hunting, Matt gained more attention and publicity that he could have ever imagined. After years of no one noticing him, Matt was now annoited "Hollywood's Golden Boy" and is now one of the most sought after actors as well as writers in the business. Matt just recently signed a multi-year deal (along with partner Ben Affleck) with Miramax. He is also working on what seems to be an endless string of movies. Having recently wrapped up shooting Kevin Smith's Dogma, Matt is supposed to start production on Anthony Minghella's The Talented (Strange) Mr. Ripley soon. However, if you can't wait that long to see Matt, no problem! His next movie, Saving Private Ryan, will be out July 24th (starring Tom Hanks). The time has finally come for the once underestimated, underappreciated Matt Damon. The time has finally come for this star to shine. No more spammin' it, no more waiting by the phone. The newly Oscar winner is America's Most Wanted and it seems as if the public can't get enough of the talented actor. He now has more movies, more contracts, and more money lined up in his future than he ever imagined possible. Success is sometimes described as dangerous. It can overwhelm you. It can change you. But, that's only if you didn't have a good solid base before the success. These are things that Matt has admirably overcome. So, what's the best advice Matt's gotten about how to handle his fame? Though the press may like to compare the two, put them against one another, fellow Glory Daze co-star, close friend, and Hollywood's last "Golden Boy," Matthew McConaughey, told Matt just to "enjoy the ride." Matt has a great respect for Matthew and says that he has such a great take on life that it's infectious. It's not the money, it's not the fame, and it's not the recognition that makes Matt Damon successful. It's the fact that he's gained the respect and the adoration he's deserved, yet he takes it in stride. It's the fact that he hasn't changed. He's stayed true to himself and loyal to the friends that he's had for years. Any doubts about that, just ask Kevin Smith. As he tells the story, Matt and Ben had signed to star in Smith's next movie, "Dogma," before the success of "Good Will Hunting" had catapulted them to super stardom. After it created such a sonic boom in the film industry, people were fighting left and right for Matt and Ben. Smith, longtime friend of the two, felt the need to let them know he'd understand if they wanted out of the movie to capitalize on the public's sudden craze for the two for more money, bigger films. Dogma finishes filming Tuesday, June 2nd and heads into post-production. WITH Matt and Ben in the finished product.
