Fine Art Photography: Kim Anderson
Like fellow photographer Anne Geddes, Kim Anderson's name is synonymous with children. His fine art photography of children in oversized clothing has a universal appeal. The black and white photographs touched with subtle bursts of color bring back the nostalgia of childhood and conjure up wonderful memories of growing-up.
Innocence, wonder and delight shine brightly in Anderson's fine art photography. Through his lens, we see the world as only a child can. Anderson's own two children are the inspiration for his fine art photography. His 8-year-old daughter is one of his top models.
Anderson's photographic muse first came to him in 1989, while taking pictures of his daughter and her friend. As part of an anniversary celebration in his town, several steam engines and historic trains were on display at the local train station. Thinking that the station would provide an excellent backdrop, Anderson took the children there to be photographed.
The children were suppose to dress appropriately for the occasion, but since they didn't have the right attire, they wore adult clothes. As a result, their sweaters looked like long knitted jackets; their leisure jackets like trench coats, and their oversized hats--well like oversized hats.
Anderson gave the children free reign to play as they liked and was soon rewarded; the scene exceeded all his creative expectations. The children's interaction--carrying their bags to the train, waving with a laugh from a railway car and hugging one another--told a story all of its own: a story that Anderson has been sharing with the world for the past ten years through his fine art photography.
